Jaclyn Hill has got a lot to answer for. I am having a real moment with her videos right now and she’s only gone and enabled me to make another haul on the Makeup Geek website. If you’ve been around these sides before then you might have seen this Makeup Geek haul I did a while back. I’m actually quite surprised that I haven’t made another purchase on the Makeup Geek site since considering how impressed I was with the quality of the eyeshadows. Well actually, that’s a lie. I know very well why I haven’t been on that site since and it’s because of the the 20% VAT charge added as well as the Royal Mail shipping and handling fee lumped on top, which all have to be paid before I’m allowed to accept the goods. Can you imagine my surprise? If you don’t factor this in (which I didn’t) then it’s not a very nice surprise especially as you’ve been eagerly waiting for two weeks for the arrival of your new makeup. Anyway, rant over.

I caved and decided that I NEEDED a few more Makeup Geek eyeshadows including two of the foiled eyeshadows which I’ve not yet had the pleasure of trying. So I’ve listed below all the eyeshadows in my recent haul along with a brief description, review and of course the Mac equivalent (I just feel like a MUG review isn’t complete without a reference to their MAC counterpart).

Creme Brulee (matte)

Makeup Geek describes it as: ‘A medium sand color with a soft matte finish’

but for me it’s a lot warmer than a sand shade and I’d describe it more of a warm, mid toned peach and works brilliantly as a transition shade especially on skin tones similar to mine. I’ve been teaming it with Cocoa Bear in the crease to create a warm, smokey eye and absolutely love this shade.

Mac Dupe: Soft Brown but more warm and peach.

Cocoa Bear (matte)

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘a matte reddish brown’

which is pretty on point! It’s a medium toned brown so great for adding in the crease to add more depth to the eyes and as I said above, its such a great shade to create a warm smokey eye with and this paired with Creme Brulee are a perfect match.

Mac Dupe: Brown Script or Swiss Chocolate but more brown.

Glamourous

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Shimmery bronze gold’

and I can see why because it’s not a straight up gold. It’s definitely a warm gold with a peachy tint to it which makes it more wearable than a straight up gold.

Mac Dupe: Gold Digger but more warm.

Cosmopolitan

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Rose Gold with gold flecks and a shimmery finish’

I think Marlena described it as a ‘rose gold’ in one of her videos and I’m having a bit of a love affair with rose gold at the moment so I just had to have it even though on first impressions on the website, I wasn’t completely sold. I’m so glad I got it though and can see myself wearing this on a bright, sunny day.

Mac Dupe: Expensive Gold but more deep and vibrant

Burlesque

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Metallic muted burgundy with warm undertones’

using the word muted just doesn’t justify this shade. It is a burgandy but with plum undertones and red shimmer running through it which may sound scary but it’s not. It’s absolutely stunning and is great for a warm, sultry smokey eye.

Mac Dupe: none apparently

Last Dance

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Satin medium to deep plummy brown’

I have this in my small Z Palette side by side with Burlesque and at a glance, they look really similar but upon swatching, Last Dance is definitely more purple than burgandy and slightly more cooler although still dark in tone.

Mac Dupe: Folie but in a satin finish.

In the Spotlight (FOILED)

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Soft pink with coral undertones and a foiled finish’

which it really isn’t at all so I was quite surprised when I swatched this. Not entirely in a bad way as it is a beautiful pale peach. Very, very pale and really shimmery and so reflective that the peach is barely there. For me, this is a highlight shade if you want a high impact brow bone or inner corner highlight. Or in the centre of the mobile lid.

Mac Dupe: not too sure there is one?

Grandstand (FOILED)

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Medium rose gold with slight taupe undertones and a foiled finish’

and I agree with it and to be honest, I hadn’t read the description until now so I was expecting something a bit more bronzy but this is definitely more warm with a lot of pink in it. This isn’t the same kind of rose gold as Cosmopolitan though, as this is much more deeper and has more brown and purple to it. To my surprise, I actually prefer this shade to In the Spotlight and I would wear this all over the lid.

Mac Dupe: your guess is as good as mine.

Showtime (FOILED)

Makeup Geek describes is as: ‘Rusty brown with warm undertones and a foiled finish’

which I guess a pretty good description although when I think of the word ‘rust’ I think of more of any orangey shade but the foiled shadow has a lot of red in it. A lot. But that’s what makes it beautiful in a One Direction kind of way. Who am I kiddin’…I’m too old for teeny bopper boybands.

Mac Dupe: nada

The matte shades are intense with pigment and are really easy to work with. No chalkiness or powderiness and a little goes a long way especially with Cocoa Bear. The rest of the shades bar the foiled shadows are a mix of satin/shimmer shades and are beautiful to work with. The formulation of the foiled eyeshadows are incredible.  Actually that doesn’t even do it justice. They are just in a league of their own. Simple. They are so soft and so smooth, and creamy to blend and the pigment just packs a real punch. If you haven’t yet tried the Makeup Geek eyeshadows, where the hell have you been?
